About this blog

Querida familia Andrade,

Boa sorte entendendo tudo!

Know that this entire site and all its pages are a great work in progress, from information, to formatting so bear with me in this "construction zone". I'd rather put it out there imperfectly than hold on to this information any longer while waiting for the time to "finish" the site.

My name is Raquel Andrade Gonçalves Lubbers. I live in the USA, but moved here from Brazil as a child. My mother was from Minas Gerais and my father from Sao Paulo. I have always loved everything about Brazil and always cherished my time there with relatives and could never get enough of family stories.

Guilherme Ignacio de Andrade was my great grandfather, my maternal grandmother's father. This website is dedicated to his ancestry. As the family story told to me by my Tia Fiica goes, "Mae Inacia" used to talk about Guilherme's illustrious ancestry, which even included a princess. As an adolescent I vowed that I would someday find out if these stories had any truth. As it turns out, not only do we have Portuguese nobility in our family lines, but also indigenous nobility. Many of the founding families of Brazil are found in Guilherme's ancestry. Some were nobles that came from Portugal in the 1500s, or from the Azores in the 1700s (whose families were the founding nobles of those Portuguese islands in the 1400s) and many of their stories have been published in genealogical and historical works.

Most of the names that I've included here have confirmed sources, but there are some where I am assuming other genealogists' work is legitimate for the time being. When exploring the page "Genealogia do Guilherme Ignacio de Andrade", I have tried to include links of where I found my information. For now, I have not included much beyond the 1400s, but I have found lines that continue through the Middle Ages and beyond, including many nobles, dukes, marquesas, lords, counts, viscounts, barons, knights, esquires, fidalgos, general gentry, and yes, even kings and queens. King Afonso I, the first king of Portugal, was our ancestor. The kings of Aragon, Castille, Seville, and Leon and Galicia number among our ancestors. El Cid is another. Because the royal lines were kept in records, these lines can actually be proven, but it will take time to sift through old books written in Portuguese that is not like the Portuguese of today.

So, why have I dedicated hundreds of hours to doing genealogy? There are two reasons that I love genealogy. The first is my belief in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (mesmo site em portugues). I believe that God has a plan for us which includes returning to live with Him after our death, judgement, and resurrection. In our afterlife, we will have the opportunity for our family units to remain intact. Those that never had the chance to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ on this earth will have the chance to accept it while they await judgement in the spirit world. God is a just God and wants to give all His children the chance to be baptized and to continue their eternal progression. That is why Mormons perform proxy baptisms for their family members who have passed away so, even after dying, they may have the chance to learn the gospel and choose to accept baptism if they desire (para entender porque os Mormons fazem batismos pelos mortos, segue aqui e para entender o que nos acreditamos sobre famílias eternas, segue aqui.). If families can truly be together forever, like I believe, then I want to do my part in helping to link the generations that have gone before me. Malachi 4:6 says "And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers." I truly feel my forefathers guiding me in this research. Many miracles have happened as I have searched through old records. My heart has been turned to my ancestors and I feel a closeness to them and a desire to meet them again someday. I'm sure when that day comes, we will meet as old friends.

The second reason I love genealogy is because, well, who isn't at least the tiniest bit curious about where they came from? I love history and love to imagine what their lives were like. What led them to move and how did they fall from great fortune to misfortune throughout the ages. It all fascinates me!

Now, onto the actual ancestry!
